All the latest Arsenal transfer news, rumours and gossip in the 2021 winter window.
Outgoings at Arsenal?
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking at his pot-match press conference following his side’s 0-0 draw with Man Utd, hinted that their could be outgoings at the club before Monday’s transfer deadline.
“Well, there are some conversations at the moment going on. I spoke with all of the players about their own situation because they are all aware of the minutes that they are playing and they want to improve their situation,” he said.
“I am willing to help them. Some of them the club is willing to help them and we will try to find a solution at the end. But I don’t know whether it’s going to be the case or not.”
Could Maitland-Niles become a Saint?
Dharmesh Sheth tells The Transfer Show:
“Mikel Arteta held his press conference ahead of facing Manchester United on Thursday, and one of the significant things he said was that there are a number of players that Arsenal need to speak to in the next two or three days to decide whether they move on to get more first-team football, or whether they remain.
“He was asked if Ainsley Maitland-Niles would be allowed to go in order to fulfil his chances of making the Euros with England, and Arteta said he needs to fight, train and show his team-mates that he can be one of our starters. Southampton are interested in taking him on loan, and Ralph Hasenhuttl said that he is hopeful of bringing in one player before the deadline.
“It’s thought that if Arsenal do allow Maitland-Niles to leave, Southampton would be their preferred destination, due to their style of play, but also because there was a thought that Arsenal might be able to get Ryan Bertrand going the other way but Hasenhuttl poured cold water on that. Bertrand is into the last six months of his contract.
“West Brom are also interested in Maitland-Niles, and it is his preferred destination as he would get more regular football and in his preferred position, which is in midfield.”
Nelson & Willock maybe loaned out
Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth on the Transfer Show (January 28):
“MIkel Arteta says he needs to talk to a number of players who aren’t getting regular first-team football at Arsenal just now and in the next three or four days decide if they are going to stay at Arsenal or go elsewhere.
“Reiss Nelson is one, a loan move to the Championship is being talked about. You remember last season Emile Smith Rowe went on loan to Huddersfield Town and really benefited from it. He came back and is now one of Arsenal’s star players. They’re hoping, perhaps, that Nelson can do the same. There is still time for Nelson to force himself into Arsenal’s first team – his contract runs until the summer of 2023.
“That’s the same time Joe Willock’s contract runs until. Odegaard’s arrival has, perhaps, pushed him down the pecking order so, perhaps, he may be made available for loan.”
Monaco in talks for Torreira
Monaco are in talks with Arsenal over the possibility of taking midfielder Lucas Torreira on loan.
Earlier this month, Arsenal technical director Edu revealed a number of clubs had approached Arsenal asking about Torreira’s situation. Fiorentina and Cagliari were interested.
However, Atletico Madrid would have to agree to cut his loan short before any deal could be done. Edu admitted there were “worries over Torreira” as he’s only started two La Liga games this season.
Arsenal complete Odegaard loan signing
Arsenal have completed the signing of Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid until the end of the season.
The 22-year-old midfielder made it clear he wanted to leave in January in order to play regular first-team football, having played just nine times in all competitions for Real Madrid this season.
Real Sociedad were keen on re-signing Odegaard following his season-long loan stint last year, but it is thought Real Madrid’s preference was to send him to a club outside La Liga.
Fenerbahce confirm Ozil
Mesut Ozil has thanked Arsenal for an “amazing journey” after his departure to Fenerbahce was confirmed, saying he goes with no grudges despite not playing for nearly a year.
Ozil said goodbye to his Arsenal team-mates a week ago and his move to Turkey had now been wrapped up, ending his nearly-eight-year stay at the Emirates.
“I’d like to thank the club for this amazing journey over the past seven-and-a-half years,” said Ozil, who has not played for the Gunners since March, with his £350,000-a-week deal set to expire at the end of the current season.
On the club’s official website he added: “The support I have felt from the team and fans during my time here has been truly incredible and something I will always be grateful for.
“Together we won trophies for the first time in years and created memories that will last a lifetime. The Arsenal fans will forever remain in my heart.
“I’d like to thank Edu Gaspar for helping bring about a professional and dignified solution in the past few days, and I wish everyone at the club the best in their attempt to continue to bring Arsenal back to the top, where we belong.”
